Children & Teen Aligners

Some children who are under 18 years old may qualify for free NHS orthodontics if they meet certain criteria. This criterion is called the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need. Examples of qualifying cases include severe instances of protruding, missing or crowded teeth, and bite concerns, as well as anything that prevents teeth from growing normally.

If the child is graded as ‘borderline,’ the cosmetic benefit of braces may be taken into account too. Treatment usually involves fixed metal braces, made up of brackets and wires and treatment last on average 18-24 months.

If you dentist thinks your child may benefit from braces, they’ll refer them to a specialist orthodontist who’ll assess if they’re eligible for free NHS care.
For children who don’t qualify for NHS care and would like a more subtle option there we provide a private option of Clear aligners such as the Invisalign system or Sparks clear Aligner system. Clear Aligners, also known as invisible or transparent aligners, can be an alternative to fixed braces and can correct common bite issues, like overbites. A clear aligner is a transparent tray made from plastic that fits over your teeth, helping to straighten them in stages.
Children usually begin their orthodontic journey between 10 and 14 years of age. In some cases, children may start earlier or later. After treatment has finished, children will usually have to continue with aftercare to keep their teeth straight by wearing a plastic removable retainer.
